Education in New Laikland is very experience-based, as it is unethical to keep kids sitting in a classroom for 8 hours a day memorizing things. Education is public and managed under the National Department of Education (NDoE). A primary education goes from ages 6-12, and secondary education can go up to ages 12-18. There are 3 branches under secondary education, depending on the goals of the student. At age 12, a person becomes independent, and may either drop out of the education system, or choose where they wish to go to school, and what they wish to do. The first level is for students who intend to have a job involving physical labour (plumber, military enlisted, etc). This goes from age 12-14, and teaches basic subjects; it's called the L1SE (Level one Secondary Education). The next diploma goes from ages 12-16, and is for students who want more advanced subjects, but are not entirely sure what they want to be. This goes further in depth into subjects, and will offer a broader horizon of job opportunities; it is called the L2SE. The final diploma for secondary education goes from ages 12-18, and is for more advanced jobs that require college/university (doctor, military officer, etc); it is called the L3SE.
Once a student acquires the L3SE, they may move on to either college or university. In New Laikland, these 2 differ greatly. A college is quicker and for certificates, such as if somebody wants to become a freelance coder. Colleges only offer up to a 2 year associate's degree. University is longer and more challenging, and offers more degrees, such as Bachelor's, Master's, and Intermediate Studies Degrees. Bachelors degrees tend to last 3-5 years, Masters degrees last between 5-8 years, and ISDs can last anywhere from 4-12 years. All education up to college/university is free in New Laikland.
In order to become a teacher, a student must have either a Masters or ISD in their subject of choice. Usually, teachers major in two subjects at a time to widen their opportunities.
